Mission Statement

Our mission is to empower the Cosmetic Dentist and Laboratory Technicians of New England by providing opportunities to develop the skills and knowledge to satisfy the growing public demand for excellence in cosmetic dentistry, while promoting the professional relationships to support this mission.

Dr. Marty Zase – President

Marty Zase was a disc jockey for eight years before becoming a dentist and is an instrument rated pilot. He is a diehard Red Sox fan, an avid reader, a not quite adequate golfer, and a graduate of Dale Carnegie Institute, Starfleet Achademy, and the Landmark Education Forum and Curriculum for Living. Dr. Zase received a B.A. from Boston University and his D.M.D. from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. A former clinical instructor in restorative dentistry at Tufts, he is now on the Restorative/ Cosmetic faculty of the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry. He has published over fifty dental articles, serves on the editorial or review boards of The Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry, Contemporary Esthetics, and General Dentistry magazines, and lecture internationally on cosmetic dentistry.

He is one of the only eight dentist in the world to have both a Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry and an Accreditation in Cosmetics from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He practices in the Colchester Dental Group and is the only dentist in the greater Hartford area accredited by the AACD. He was the 2006-2007 President of the AACD, the largest cosmetic dentistry organization in the world. He serves on the AACD Board of Accreditation Examiners and mentors Accreditation candidates. At the AACD, he was one of the developers of both the University Advisory Council and the Private Education Advisory Council to help spread the teaching of cosmetic dentistry to dental students at all stages or their careers. He is also a member of the Board of Directors of the New England Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

He has developed numerous techniques and instruments that are currently used in modern cosmetic dentistry. He was inducted into the Dental Hall of Fame by the genR8TNext Internet dental community (now the Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics) in acknowledgement of his contributions to dental education. For his contributions to dentistry and dental education, he has also been granted fellowships in the American College of Dentists (FACD), the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the International Academy of Dental Facial Esthetics (FADFE). Dr. Zase lives in Glastonbury, Connecticut and is available online at Martyzase@aol.com. Dr. Zase can usually be found around town, dressed in a Hawaiian shirt and matching socks.

Michael Szarek, D.M.D., MS – Immediate Past President

Dr. Szarek graduated from the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine in 1994 followed by a one year Genaral Practice Residency at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford,CT. He has a general and aesthetic dental practice in Lowell,MA. inspired by the AACD and Dawson Center for Advanced Dental Education. Dr. Szarek is a sustaining member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry on the accreditation tract. He is also a member of the ADA, AGD, Massachusetts Dental Society and Past President of the Greater Lowell Dental Society. He enjoys golf, fishing, hunting and skiing.

Dr. David Ward – Co-Treasurer

Dr. David Ward graduated from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in May of 1989. Following in his father Bernard V. Wards’ footsteps , he opened a practice in Woonsocket, Rhode Island.

Dr. Ward has spent the last 6 years focusing on improving his skills in the areas of cosmetic dentistry and dental implantology. In 2009, he completed the Masters level in The Aesthetic Advantage Continuum at New York University. The program, headed by Dr. Larry Rosenthal, teaches Dr.s from around the world the newest techniques in aesthetic dentistry. Dr. Rosenthal is a pioneer in the field of cosmetic/aesthetic dentistry and is responsible for the smiles of many stars and super models. In 2010, Dr. Ward was honored to be invited to be an instructor at The Aesthetic Advantage course.

Dr. Ward also completed the Maxi-Course in dental implantology at NYU. The course required 300 hours of hands on and lectures, culminating in a rigorous exam. In April,2011 Dr. Ward completed the requirements to become an Associate Fellow in The American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

He also is a Fellow of the ICOI and a member of the ADA,AACD,NEACD,RIDA and past president of The Greater Woonsocket District Dental Society. In 2009, Dr. Ward was proud to be inducted into The Pierre Fauchard Society, a dental honor society.

He lives in Pascoag, RI with his wife of 25 years, Michelle. They have three beautiful children, Samantha ( who will soon be applying to dental school ) Jonathan, a freshman at Curry College, and Alexandra who is a junior at Mount St. Charles Academy. Dr. Ward enjoys golfing, boating, fishing and spending time with his family.

Michele Salonia D.M.D. – Secretary

Michele Salonia, D.M.D. is a graduate of St. Lawrence University and the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. She has practiced dentistry in her hometown of Middletown, Connecticut since 1983. She is a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and the Connecticut State Dental Association. She has been a Board member of the NEACD since 2003. She is married, has four adult children, and enjoys traveling, skiing and bicycling.

Randall Burba D.M.D.

Dr. Burba is a 1991 graduate of Providence College and a 1995 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. He has a practice in Salem Massachusetts with his father, Dr. Stanley Burba, which focuses on advanced cosmetic dentistry in a dental spa atmosphere. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Mass Dental Association and the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, and has been a board member of the New England Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry since 2003. He is currently an accreditation candidate in the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Dr. Burba is married to Dr. Patricia Burba D.M.D. they have three children, Katelyn, Rachel, and Ryan. He enjoys boating, fishing, scuba, woodworking, painting, drawing, and being a father.

Speakers

Dr. Betsy Bakeman

Dr. Bakeman received her D.D.S. degree from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry. She is a member of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry and the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry and and Accredited Fellow of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). Dr. Bakeman serves as an examiner for both the Accreditation and the Fellowship examinations administered by the AACD. She served as Chairman of Accreditation for the AACD and the Chairman of the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry. She is an Adjunct Faculty member of the Kois Center in Seattle, Washington.

Dr. Bakeman works with dentists and technicians to promote education through publication and served two years as Contributing Editor to the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. In addition, she serves on several editorial boards. She currently serves as a Section Editor for Compendium. She publishes and lectures on the topics of comprehensive dentistry and periodontal plastic surgery in the esthetic zone. She maintains a full-time private practice in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Dr. Hugh Flax

Hugh D. Flax received his DDS degree from Emory University in 1983 following undergraduate Phi Beta Kappa honors. While doing a residency he did Posterior Composites research at LSU Dental School in 1984-1985. He has been a member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry since 1994 and became accredited in 1997. He was President of the Atlanta Chapter of the AACD (1996-1998) and Local Chapters Chairperson (1998-1999). Dr. Flax served for two years as Co-Chair of the Conference Advisory Committee for 2003 AACD Scientific Session in Orlando. In May 2005, he became the Chairman of the 2008 Meeting in New Orleans. He is on the Editorial Boards of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry and Practical Procedures and Aesthetic Dentistry. Furthermore, he has chaired the Private Education Advisory Council and the Disaster Relief Committee, and is an active member of the AACD Board of Directors and the Marketing, Leadership Development, and Finance Committees. Recently, he is the founding President of the Georgia Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and remains on its Board. In May 2008, he was elected Vice President of the AACD and will become President in 2010-2011.

Outside of the AACD, Dr. Flax is a member of the American Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Academy of Laser Dentistry, and the L.D. Pankey Alumni Association. In addition, as a Fellow of the World Clinical Laser Institute, he contributes time as member of their teaching faculty. Lastly, he is a lecturer and product evaluator for Catapult (Dental Team Concepts), a group dedicated to improving dental care throughout the world.

Dr. Flax practices full time in Atlanta, Georgia focusing on functional-appearance related conditions and advanced laser dentistry as well as writing and lecturing on how to help others do the same for their own practices. Lastly, while helping his wife Robyn raise two beautiful girls, he focuses on many charitable causes including Give Back A Smile, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome Foundation, and Habitat for Humanity’s Musicians’ Village in New Orleans.

Dr. John F. Weston, D.D.S. F.A.A.C.D.

Dr. Weston is a native Californian who received his doctorate from Oklahoma University in 1989 and graduated with honors. As a commissioned officer in the US Navy, he received multiple advanced medical certifications while completing a General Practice Residency at Naval Hospital, San Diego and served independent duty in support of Desert Storm. Dr. Weston has earned the credential of Accredited Fellow from the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (“AACD”), an honor shared by fewer than 50 clinicians worldwide. Dr. Weston is twice past Chair of the AACD Professional Education Committee responsible for coordinating the AACD Annual Scientific Session and has served two terms as an elected member to the Board of Directors. He is currently an active Accreditation and Fellowship Examiner and is now serving a three-year term on the American Board of Cosmetic Dentistry – the credentialing authority of the AACD. He lectures nationally and internationally, publishes articles, evaluates new and emerging dental products and provides hands-on educational formats. Practicing in La Jolla for over 20 years, Dr Weston has an emphasis in reconstructive, non-metal esthetic dentistry and the “Digital Restorative Workflow”. He is owner and director of Scripps Center for Dental Care, a unique multi-specialty dental center located at Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, CA.
